A long-awaited day for U.N.C.L.E. fans [Apr. 18th, 2006|06:03 pm]
As some who read this blog and know me apart from For the Love of Opera Gloves know, I'm a longtime "Man from U.N.C.L.E." fan (and occasional U.N.C.L.E. fanfic writer). MFU fans have felt left out for years as vintage TV series after vintage TV series has been released on DVD, leaving Napoleon, Illya and Mr. Waverly adrift in the realm of fading, fan-dubbed VHS. No longer. See this link:

http://www.orderdvdtvshows.com/odts_news_by_show/manfromuncle04182006.shtml

If the link doesn't open for you, the short version is that Anchor Bay Entertainment proposes to release Season 1 (considered by many cognoscenti to be the best season) of MFU as a 4-disc, double-sided DVD box set (with extras) on July 25. Save up your money!

New update now available [Apr. 18th, 2006|05:59 pm]
This week's update to For the Love of Opera Gloves went up on Sunday. I've once again raided my archives of pictures of classic Hollywood stars in opera gloves (and yes, I do need pictures of _modern_ Hollywood stars in opera gloves - IF THEY WEAR THEM!!!) to create new galleries for:

Donna Reed
Sonja Henie

and update galleries for:

Barbara Stanwyck
Hedy Lamarr
Marlene Dietrich
Jane Russell
Carole Lombard
Claudette Colbert
Gloria Swanson
Irene Dunne

Go to What's New At For the Love of Opera Gloves for further details. You're welcome. :)

Slight delay in this week's update [Apr. 9th, 2006|08:04 pm]
I do have a good reason, believe it or not. I have been vidcapping glove scenes from classic European movies of the 1940's and 1950's (French and Italian, to be precise, with such stars as Danielle Darrieux, Michele Morgan, Silvana Pampanini, Suzy Delair and Edwige Feuillere) since yesterday afternoon. Having gone through something like 15 films (and I haven't even gotten to the ones from the modern day yet!), I'm pretty thoroughly worn out. I intend to have the update with some of the best caps from this project up by Tuesday, and I think you'll agree it was worth the wait.

Late again, Bullwinkle! [Mar. 30th, 2006|06:20 pm]
(to quote what one of my regular correspondents said when he was scolding me for a late update a couple of months back...)

Sorry for not posting like I said I would, but Real Life (tm) got in the way. My older of two sisters delivered a baby daughter late Monday night (the younger one gave birth to a son just before Christmas), and I've also been spending most of the week occupied in finalizing the purchase of a new car.

Next Sunday's update will likely feature opera-gloved stars of the current day, which ones I haven't decided just yet.

Unsolicited plug :) [Mar. 26th, 2006|10:59 am]
I wanted to mention that a recent acquaintance of mine, Teri of Bootlovers.com, has started a new blog, Booted Up. She's only been running it since Friday evening but it already looks to be bookmark-worthy. Teri, incidentially, loves opera gloves just about as much as boots, and has often referred to opera gloves as being boots for the arms - which, to my way of thinking, is a riff on the German word for gloves, Handschuhe, literally meaning "hand-shoe".

Teri's already turned up something which should be of interest to anyone who owns fine leather gloves, especially vintage pairs, and needs them cleaned:

Update work complete [Mar. 26th, 2006|09:02 am]
I've just finished putting together this week's update. Next step is to transfer it to the server. This will take some time because I have another application running that's taking up a lot of the outgoing bandwidth on my connection, but the new galleries will be available by tonight.

Thinking back to this year's Oscars... [Mar. 25th, 2006|06:43 pm]
...while all the foofooraw about "Brokeback Mountain" was going on, I think the real scandal was missed. When was the last time you actually saw more than one or two actresses wearing opera gloves to the Academy Awards? Back in the day, virtually everyone female went gloved, if just in "shorties", to the Oscars. Now, you have to go frame-by-frame through the broadcast to try to catch a glimpse of somebody wearing operas in the background almost every year. It's a sign of the decline of civilization, is what it is...or at least, a sign of the decline of proper dress.

Well now, isn't this special... [Mar. 25th, 2006|08:16 am]
Just looked at the visitors-by-country stats for this month. I got 10 hits from the Vatican City and 7 from Saudi Arabia, and even one from Burkina Faso. I wasn't even aware there was anyone in Burkina Faso who was interested in opera gloves, much less could wear them in that climate. :)

Back in action [Mar. 25th, 2006|07:52 am]
I just realized that I haven't updated this blog since October. Sorry, folks. I don't know where the time goes; I've been dealing with the usual pile of online and offline stuff. If you've been keeping up with For the Love of Opera Gloves, though, you know that the site has been (mostly) staying regularly updated - I've been able to keep up with that much!

From now on, I'm going to try to get back into the habit of posting at least once a day, depending on how much I have to say. Sitewise, tomorrow's update isn't going to be anything really extraordinary, just the usual biweekly vidcap update. I haven't done much vidcapping the last couple of weeks (mostly working on fanfics instead during my usual vidcapping time), so I'm going to pull half-a-dozen or so galleries from the archives and put them up. As long-time visitors to For the Love of Opera Gloves know, I've been working over the last four years to put up better-quality vidcap galleries whenever the DVD of a movie becomes available, and so for this update, here's the tentative list:

A New Kind of Love (redone from DVD) (Joanne Woodward)
Barbarella (Anita Pallenberg)
First Lady (Kay Francis)
Imitation of Life (Lana Turner version)
New Orleans (Dorothy Patrick)
Sabrina (redone from DVD) (Audrey Hepburn, Martha Hyer)

Look for the new galleries sometime tomorrow evening!
